Allstate

iOS & Android App

When working on an ambitious project with a large team, everyone has a specific role to play.

At Allstate, I strove to find the right balance between delivering detailed, high-fidelity UI work while also providing meaningful higher-level strategy that contributed to the project's overall success.

Background

Allstate is an American insurance company that provides insurance for home, auto, life, and more. Allstate brought me on to help them with research and design for a brand new iteration of their mobile app.

Team Structure

I was a product designer on a 20+ person UX Design & Research team at Allstate that worked with 100+ developers, product managers, and business analysts.

Timeline

5 months

My Roles

  • Research: Participated in 1:1 user sessions, synthesized research findings, and used insights to inform design decisions
  • Design: Used and contributed to Allstate's design system to deliver high-fidelity screens for iOS and Android; developed and implemented Dark Mode
  • Supported Developers: Worked closely with iOS & Android engineers to deliver high-quality final product; used Zeplin for engineer handoff

Project Goals

  • Design one app with all of Allstate's offerings as the primary digital touchpoint for customers
  • Implement new, modern design aesthetic and customer-friendly language
  • Enable discovery of new Allstate services
  • Seamlessly migrate 2.7 million monthly active users to new app

I used Allstate's design system to build these screens and many others.

Challenges & Solutions

Primary digital touchpoint for customers

Challenge: Previously, in order for a customer to access all of Allstate's products, they needed to use multiple apps and websites. Allstate wanted to consolidate all their services into one app.

Solution: The new app houses all products under one app to provide a simple, seamless user experience. Customers can now easily access their ID card, view/pay bills, make claims, and more in one single app.

This required a highly systemized visual and UX strategy, along with a design system to support it.

New brand and style guide

Challenge: Prior to the start of this project, Allstate had undergone a brand and style redesign. They wanted to incorporate this into the new app.

Solution: We carried over their updated, more modern visual style to the new app and created a design system to support rapid and consistent prototyping. Based on additional research findings, we also used simpler, friendlier language wherever possible.

Discovery of new Allstate services

Challenge: Previously, new services were difficult to learn about because they lived in different places and descriptions weren't always clear. Allstate wanted to make it easier to educate customers.

Solution: By using simple language and strategic placements, all under the roof of a single app, we created a platform to educate customers about Allstate's newest services.

Migrate all 2.7M users to new app

Challenge: Allstate wanted it to be as easy as possible for customers to update to a new app.

Solution: The updated app provides features customers are used to as well as new functionality that customers expressed interest in, all in one app. This, along with an intuitive UI, makes it easy for customers to adapt to a new app.
